Two More Medals For The Attleborough Boxing Club's 'Golden Girls'

Two junior female boxers from Attleborough Boxing Club started the 2014 season in style by each gaining a gold medal in The Golden Girl Championship in Boras, Sweden.

Emma Dolan (15) and Lily Devlin (14) travelled to Boras with lead coach Jon Dennis and level two coach Matt Dean to compete in the three-day tournament from the 10th to the 12th January this year. The Golden Girl Championship is an all female tournament that is entered by girls from Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Russia, Finland, Norway, Germany, Ireland and Scotland as well as England. It gives female boxers a chance to show their skills and compete for the “Golden Girl” title.

This title is traditionally won by a senior elite girl as it is judged on a range of boxing skills and ring-craft that would usually come with age and experience, although it is open to all age groups. Both girls have competed in this tournament in the past as it is an excellent opportunity to box against skilled opponents from other countries and gain valuable experience.

Lily was the first to compete, taking on a competent Swedish opponent. Lily competed in a Diplom bout, which is similar to a skills bout in England but does have a winner and a loser. The girls were judged on boxing skills, footwork, breathing technique and the power of the shots had to be controlled. Each girl had to achieve a minimum of 27 points in order to achieve their Diploma status and Lily achieved this, showing skill and determination in every round. She went on to win the bout in a majority2-1decision by the judges. This was a straight final so Lily was awarded a gold medal for the 60kg Diplom category.

Emma boxed next in a 52kg junior bout against a strong Swedish opponent. The Swedish girl came on strong with a high work rate, but Emma managed to keep her at bay and won the bout on a unanimous decision.

This was a semi-final bout, and the bout following Emma’s was between the other two girls in her class. This bout was between a Swiss champion and the Swedish champion for this weight category. The Swiss girl had beenthe favourite to win but was out boxed on the day by herskillful Swedish opponent. This meant that Emma would face another Swedish opponent the following day for the final.

Emma came out strong in the first round of the final, and really upped her game for the Swedish champion. She dominated her opponent throughout the bout and gained a unanimous 3-0 decision from the judges and a gold medal!

Emma and Lily both boxed well and proved their ability to box abroad against unknown opponents and win. They both showed true dedication to their chosen sport. Hopefully this is the start of a great season for both girls this year.
